Aww! Poor Joe. I don't even think this is a particularly out-there thing to happen: his sleeping brain was trying to process the traumatic memories + the physically pleasurable reality of Nicky's closeness at the same time and came up with "Trauma is sexy I guess?? Sure, let's throw THAT at the wall."
His misery was really well-painted and I'm so glad you gave him some relief.
