Joe and Nicky are in a relationship where they are open to sleeping with other people, although Nicky isn't interested so he rarely does it, but he doesn't mind at all that Joe has fun because they are very secure in their 900 years of love. But someone else (another member of the team if you wish, or Copley, or an outsider entirely) slut shames Joe and Nicky rises passionately to his defence.
(Honestly, if the author prefers to flip it I can see it the other way too, because Joe is a drippy romantic who only has eyes for his Nicolo 95% of the time but if someone ever dares question Nicky's love for him it is gloves OFF TIME TO FITE.)
