Something else happened to Nicky and Joe on the day that they killed each other. Their names appeared as if tattooed, over each other's hearts. Or one of Nicky's eyes turned brown while one of Joe's turned green. Or maybe suddenly once one of them learns how to do something, the other can automatically do it too. It's strange and surprising for them to learn that this thing isn't just part of the whole being an immortal thing. Whatever it is is something that they can sort of show the rest of the family in some way, although there's maybe some scoffing at their insistence that whatever it is started when they touched for the first time.
