Joe's family used to be servants to the Di Genoa family or other sort of association. Either way, Joe had spent much time befriending Di Genoa's youngest son Nicky. They were inseparable despite the difference in class. Little Yusuf and Nicolò declaring at very young age that they will get married one day to their parents bemusement. But it develops into true love for one another as they grow older into their teens despite their parents thinking they will grow out of it.
However, when Joe was off to some sort of higher education at age 20 (maybe as a way to separate the two?), some tragedy occurred with the Di Genoa's and they were all murdered. Joe is absolutely devastated...and never forgot about his first love despite trying his best to move on.
Many years later, maybe his close friend Booker tries to get him laid and takes him to a brothel. Joe didn't want to go but this is only way for Booker to stop pestering him. He wasn't in the mood for it and asked for whoever ...doesn't even look at the prostitute all dressed and decorated kneeling on the bed.
"Look I know I've paid for you, but-" Joe chokes when he finally meets the eyes of the man, the colors unforgettable. It's Nicky.
Up to writer if Nicky recognizes Joe or not. And up to writer if Joe has sex with Nicky because Nicky will be whored out again to a different person if not well used for the night (if so, Nicky is perplexed by Joe’s gentleness) or maybe Joe wants to cuddle all night and Nicky is confused by this patron.
