Okay, so... when Yusuf and Nicolo met for the first time Nicolo just traveled the whole way from Italy to Jerusalem, then there was war and all that and Nicolo didn't have the time (or just didn't feel like) to shave. So he looked a little bit like a caveman.
Then there was the thing with "killing each other many times" and at some point the two realized thay couldn't die, whatever they did so they had to get away before someone noticed. So, again no time to take care of the beard.
But then they found a place where they could lie low for a while and finally Nicolo cuts his hair and shaves his beard... and Yusuf is absolutely stunned. He hadn't expected this under all the hair and scruff...
