Nicky's been estranged from his family/friends back home for a while bc X (left the church, was gay, other). He had a rough couple years, and then he met Joe and it was like the sun came out from behind the clouds. He's happy with his life, he has great friends and the best partner he could imagine. When X person from his old life turns up/he has to go back home for whatever reason, he just wants to get it over with. He has nothing to prove to anyone.
Joe, on the other hand, desperately wants to prove to these people how worthy of love, special and wonderful Nicky is. How he goes about this - being very affectionate, showing off all of Nicky's accomplishments, having Nicky fuck him in a just-slightly-too-public place where everyone can hear him scream Nicky's name and tell him how good he's fucking Joe - is up to you.
I imagine this being modern AU - I can't really see it working in canon.
