Fill: Joe vs Keane fighting over Nicky

It's a Friday night. Nicky has been having a night out with Joe, Booker, Nile, Andy and Quynh. He doesn't usually drink, didn't like the strong liquors that his friends usually went for that had more bite for the buck. Nile, however, the newest of their group, had refused to settle for the straight stuff and introduced Nicky to cocktails.
So he was a little drunk when they left the bar to head to the bus stop that would take them back to campus. Joe was under one arm keeping him upright. "You're my best friend," Nicky told him solemnly.
"Duh, Nicky. I've known that for three years," Joe said.
"Stop callin' me Nicky. Gotta... gotta sound like a adult," Nicky insisted.
"Nicky," Joe said, in an annoying cooing voice, "There's no way I can ever call you Nick. You're my roommate and I know all your secrets. Like Bob. I betcha not even Andy knows about Bob."
"Who's Bob?" Nile asked.
Andy gave Joe a smirk. "Of course I know about Bob."
"What about Bob?" Booker said.
"Shhh!" Nicky said, waving a finger at Joe and Andy. "No one can know about Bob!"
"Bob's his stuffed--"
Nicky smacked a hand over his best friend's blabbing mouth. "Shut up!"
"Hey, Nick," a new voice asked. "You alright?"
Of course it was Keane. Joe hated Keane. Keane called Nicky Nick and did actual team sports and was somehow one of Nicky's friends from classes even though Joe knew he was a complete douchebag.
"Keane! I'm fiiine!" Nicky chirped brightly. "What'r'ya doin' here?"
"Catching the bus. Me and some of the guys from the team came to town for a couple drinks."
Joe scowled at the other guys. Keane-clones, basically, despite their different stupid hair and different stupid faces.
"I asked if you wanted to come with us before," Keane said, "But you said you don't drink."
Nicky pulled away from Joe and staggered towards him. "I don't drink beer," Nicky corrected with a haughty tone. "But Nile into- intor- introduced cocktails! Those are good."
Keane chuckled. "I see. I'm glad you had fun."
"Keane. Hey, Keane." Nicky probably thought he was whispering but he wasn't. He lurched forward and Keane braced his shoulder so he didn't fall onto his face. "I don't just like cocktails," Nicky said, like he was imparting a secret. He couldn't keep up the ruse long, and started snickering before he added, "I also like cock!"
Everybody laughed except for Joe. It wasn't a secret, not among their group of friends. Andy, Quynh, Booker and Nile laughed at how Nicky was cracking himself up. Keane and his friends were laughing because they were assholes, Joe could tell. Keane was going to say something horrible to Nicky, now, Joe knew it.
"I was kind of wondering about that," Keane said, cutting a quick look at Nicky's gang of friends a little uncomfortably. "I was hoping to ask you out sometime. If you are interested."
"Yes," Nicky said immediately. "Now?"
Keane laughed and held him off. "Not tonight, Nick. I'll send you a text."
Joe couldn't take it. He stepped forward and slapped Keane's hand away from Nicky. "No you won't."
Keane took a couple steps back and raised his hands. "Sorry? He told me you were friends, not-"
"I love him," Joe snarled directly into Keane's stupid douchey face. "I love this man. He is the moon when I am lost in darkness."
Someone tugged on Joe's elbow. It's Andy. "Back off, Joe. You're obviously not sober either."
"You back off!" Joe turned on Keane.
"How much did he drink?" Quynh asked.
"Why should I back off?"
"There was the Hennessey," Booker said, "Then the--"
"You don't even call him Nicky!"
"Rhetorical question," Quynh interrupted.
"His name is Nick. He told me his name is Nick."
"Nicky?" Nile asked, creeping up to his side to get a glimpse of his face in the streetlight. His expression was of confusion.
"If you really knew him you would know he has always been Nicky!"
"Joe," Andy tried again.
"Maybe he doesn't want to be called Nicky. Maybe he wants to have a man's name because he is a grown-ass adult!"
"Keane? Call down, man," one of his friends said worriedly.
"Don't you dare talk about his ass, you... you asshole!"
Keane threw his hands up. "I wasn't! Chill, man!"
Joe took the movement of frustration as a threat and raised his fists. "Stay away from Nicky," he practically growled.
This finally broke Keane's patience. He flexed his own muscles and clapped his hands before lowering into a defensive stance. "You can't tell me what to do. If I want to ask Nick out on a date he gets to decide."
"You don't deserve him!" Joe launched himself at Keane. Andy, Quynh, and Booker exchanged a look of resignation, while Nile looked almost panicked and Nicky looked... enthralled.
"Does Joe usually do this?!" Nile asked.
"Sometimes," Booker says with a shrug.
"First time it's over Nicky, though," Quynh said.
Joe's punches were being easily blocked but it was only making him madder.
Nile looked concerned. "He's... really not good at this."
"He's a Lit Major with an emphasis on romantic poetry," Booker said. "Of course he's not!"
"This Keane guy is holding back, though. Nice of him," Andy commented.
"Why is Joe fighting?" Nicky asked, his eyes not leaving the two guys brawling in the parking lot. He looked starry-eyed and pleased as punch, though, so none of his friends bothered answering.
"Should we pull him out?" Nile asked.
"He'll just get mad at us," Andy said. "This guy's doing good."
"Your friend's a dick," one of Keane's teammates said.
"Yeah," Book said, "Sorry."
"Are those two even together?" The other jock asked.
"They're roommates. I think Joe is just drunk," Quynh said.
Nile snorted. "You all have known them for too long. They are both clearly wanting to be more. It took me two months to figure out they weren't actually romantic, just idiots."
There was a loud "Oomph" as Keane brought his knee up into Joe's stomach.
"Stand down," Keane said, harshly but not nastily.
"Fuck off," Joe snapped, and he went at his larger opponent again.
Keane jabbed him in his left eye and finally Joe backed off with a palm over the hurt. When Joe fell to his knees Keane turned to Nicky. "I tried not to hurt him too bad."
"Thanks," Nicky said with a wide smile before he went over to collapse over Joe and coo over his injuries.
"Sorry about him," Booker said.
"Don't worry about it," Keane said. "I, uh, have a problem backing down from challenges," he admitted. He looked over to Nicky and Joe, who had their hands on each other's faces and were staring at each other with dopey grins. "I don't think I'll be texting Nick, though." Keane's expression was a little soft and vicariously pleased, though.
"I don't think he'll remember," Andy said.
Quynh tapped her glasses. "I recorded it all," she said smugly. "This will get me Joe's homemade cookies for years."
"The bus," one of Keane's buddies said.
Andy directed Booker with a gesture of her head to go over and pry Joe and Nicky off the ground.
"Your heart overflows with a kindness of which this world is not worthy of," Joe was saying earnestly to Nicky who was clearly lapping it all up.
"C'mon idiots," Andy ordered. They refused to let go of their hands as she and Book hauled them toward the bus stop.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-10 05:01 pm (UTC)(link)I loved your Keane? I know WTF. Him being actually nice makes the situation with Joe even more hilarious, because joe is so convinced the guy is an asshole because he dares to *Checks notes* talk to Nicky!
Joe being a lit major and getting owned by Keane was absolutely brilliant. I was grinning.
Thank you!!!
