He should have told Nicky as soon as she found them. He had pretended that he feared Nicky would blame her for not coming back directly as he blames Booker for falling into despair.
If that was the 'pretend' reason I'd love to know the 'real' reason Joe and/or the others gave for keeping Quynh and Nicky apart, especially if they were so close before.
