Please use a header with your character(s)/pairing and a title and/or keyword or short phrase. (For example: "Just you and me: Andy/Quynh, Make-up sex" or "Between a Rock and A Hard Place: Nicky/Joe/Booker, first time DP").

Please also comment with a link to your fill in the prompt post, under the prompt you are responding to. Your comment header should include the word "Fill" or "Filled", so that those checking out the thread can find your fic/art more easily (For example: "FILL: Re: Any/Quynh, Make-up sex").

Fill: Nicky/Joe Dragon and Prince AU

Prince Nicky, like so many other young nobles, is locked in a tower with a dragon (Joe) to guard him. Nicky is supposed to be stuck there until his one true love (or more realistically whoever his parents choose) come but by the time his rescuer arrives he's already fallen head over heels for his dragon and has absolutely no intentions of leaving or allowing him to be killed.
Hope you like it!

The misfortune of elusive love

Nicolò, Prince Steven Merrick of England is on his way. You are thirty years old and you are no longer of age to reject marriage, as you have done so many times. Your father and I hope you do the right thing, please.
P.S. Your sister sends her regards, her second child is almost going to be born.

Although the painting of the prince had not convinced him much (pale and with a huge nose), Steven knew that he should marry, and better to marry this prince than with Lady Kozak, since Lady Kozak beat him by at least twenty years, and Prince Nicolò only for five. Besides, the prince was obedient and calm, as the kings had told him, and he had been so alone all those years that he would surely fall at Steven's feet.
The only thing he didn't like was the dragon guarding the prince, who had apparently killed a couple of unfortunate candidates before. Nothing to worry about according to the queen's words; they weren't worthy, and Steven was, after all he had the blessing to marry the prince as soon as he took him away. He couldn't wait to get back to Keane and tell him about this.
Prince Nicolò lived in a tower, in the middle of a forest, a couple of days away from the nearest village. Steven left with the good wishes of the kings and the intention of ending the matter as soon as possible. Genova was not an unpleasant land, but his country was far better. He hoped the prince would appreciate what he was doing for him, he told himself when the fire for his food went out due to the rain.
The tower rose between small hills full of trees. As he rode, Steven watched stretches of the forest blackened, presumably by dragon fire. But there were no wings or growls the entire trip, thank goodness. He had to stop long before arriving. There was a small, brush-stubbled path. The tower was still a good distance away.
It was obvious that no one had been there for a while. That is why he was surprised to see a man lying on the ground with his eyes closed and with nothing to cover his torso. He was dark and muscular, a peasant lounging in the hot sun.
"Boy," he called, leading his horse as close as he could. The animal was of the finest lineage, and Keane had trained it specifically for him, but at the moment, despite directing it, the horse simply didn't want to get close and bucked until Steven gave up. Stubborn animal.
"You're talking to me?"
"Who else?" Steven dismounted and approached the man, stretching out the reins. "I need you to take care of my horse, give it water and fodder, and I also need directions, is that the tower of Prince Nicolò?"
The man held the reins, and for the first time, he seemed to notice Steven. He had strange eyes and an even weirder smile.
"Are you Merrick?"
"Steven Merrick," he felt magnanimous to correct that poor uncivilized fellow. Not much could be expected from Continentals. "I come to look for Nicolò."
"Nicolò is in the tower." The man pointed the way. "Straight ahead."

The door to the tower was ajar when Steven arrived, though open enough for Steven to pass. There was a strange scent in the air, something wild and powerful, that made him grab the pommel of his sword. He knew how to use it, of course, but (and not for the first time) he wished Keane had accompanied him. From the entrance to the tower, he walked down a dark corridor to the main courtyard.
It was quite a peaceful place, full of trees and a fountain in the middle, where was… well, his prince, right? The man he assumed was his prince was drawing water from the fountain with a bucket; he stopped, raised his eyes and looked at him curiously as Steven approached.
Nicolò was… pretty different from painting. His shoulders were incredibly broad, he had deep circles under his eyes, and his hair seemed cut by a blunt knife. He was barefoot on the stones of the patio, wearing clothes that probably belonged to a villager, not a prince of Genova. But Steven had been better educated, and you do not look gift horses in the mouth.
"Prince Nicolò?" He bowed gently and took the prince's hand that wasn't busy with the bucket. His fingers were full of calluses and Steven released him immediately.
"Nicky."
"Nicky?"
"I like being called Nicky."
"Prince… Nicky, my name is Steven Merrick. I came from England to see you."
The prince did not answer anything and continued to draw water from the fountain. Did he have no servants? Steven looked around. The place looked abandoned and he could only hear some birds. There were no horses, or pigs (which would be worse), and neither...
"Do you know where the dragon is?"
"Comes and goes," Nicky replied, shrugging his shoulders. "He can't be here watching me all the time, can he? "
"No?"
"Dragons have a very active social life, did you know that?"
Steven shook his head. Truth be told, he had only seen dragons in children's stories and at the occasional fair. He knew it was a giant fire-breathing lizard, and that was enough.
"Well, pack your things, we have to go."
"Where?"
"Didn't your parents inform you? With me, to England."
"I'm not going."
Steven was patient, more with this wild husband he had gained, and there were times when better things were achieved talking than fighting. He would have time in England to file off those calluses and put him in appropriate clothes. Maybe even make him lose weight a bit.
"Do you want to live in this dump for the rest of your life? Scared by a dragon, without friends and without leaving?"
"This dump is my home, Steven," Nicolò growled, and suddenly Steven realized that he was taller than him, though not by much.
"That's ... a sad thing, certainly, but now you can come with me."
"No thanks."
"But you must come with me. Your parents said you were obedient and wanted to get out of here."
"People lie, Merrick," Nicolò said, and that cordiality (false, Steven assumed) disappeared under overly vigilant eyes and clenched fists as he set the container beside the fountain.
"They are your parents."
"You'll excuse me, but they locked me up here when I was a kid, don't think I owe them anything."
"You're a prince, that's what princes do!" Steven stepped forward and took Nicolò by the wrist. "You have to come."
He didn't know how it happened; Nicolò released his arm, in an instant the floor turned, and Steven found himself lying down, his jaw sore and Nicolò rising on top of him. Steven stepped back and stood up, a decent distance away. He drew his sword in one fluid motion (Keane had told him it looked good), pointing it at Nicolò.
"I don't think you understand me, prince," he said, giving his voice the coldest tone he could. "I wasn't asking you."
He was proud when the man showed no fear, yet he wished Nicolò at least appeared concerned about the sword in front of him. It's not like Steven could kill his future husband, just incapacitate or hurt enough to get him out of there.
"You should go," Nicolò said softly.
"You will marry me!"
A sound interrupted his sentence. Steven realized they were the front doors, which had just been opened. They were heavy oak doors, with iron studs, impossible to move, not even with a ram.
In the consequent silence, Steven was able to hear the footsteps of someone approaching through the entrance tunnel and turned towards the place, clenching his fingers on the hilt of his weapon. The man from a while ago was there, but he wasn’t the same. He was frowning, and the strange eyes gleamed gold, the irises like two dark vertical lines. Steven prided himself on his intelligence, and quickly put the sword away.
"I think you need help," said the dragon to Prince Nicolò, who smiled for the first time, a gesture that markedly embellished his face. He didn't seem to be afraid of the dragon.
"I'm not, but go on," he replied, and went back to his task, ignoring Steven.
"You should go, Merrick," stated the dragon, smiling, but there was nothing warm there, just sharp teeth and a promise of fire and blood if Steven didn't leave. There were times when you won, and others (the least) when you lost. That was a lose-lose one; and there was no prince in this world who was worth Steven's life.
"I will accompany you to your horse, if he is still alive."
His horse was, fortunately, alive, tied to a tree. Its tail was drooping, and its ears were thrown back. He snorted softly when he saw it and Steven immediately reached out to touch him, feeling the tremors that ran through his body.
"You can tell the kings that Nicky is married." The dragon had something in his hand, and when he opened it, Steven was speechless. It was the largest and brightest gemstone he had ever seen; not even the Crown Jewels had such a thing. That must have been worth a small country. "It's Nicky's dowry," the dragon said and took Steven's hand, placing the stone. "I hope it reaches the court of Genova."
Steven squeezed the stone, knowing what the threat was in the unspoken words.
"Also, tell the queen that we will go for the birth of the little prince. Nicky has not seen his sister for a long time. Can I trust you with this mission, Merrick?"
Steven nodded frantically, fearful that the dragon would interpret his silence as a negative. He was suddenly silent, and despite opening his mouth, he could not force the words out.
"Well, Merrick, I knew you were a good man."
The dragon patted him on the shoulder and walked back to the tower. Steven stayed there, and when the other disappeared around a corner, his legs stopped supporting him and he collapsed next to his horse. Oh God, he will have to marry Lady Kozak.

OP here - thanks so much for the fill! I loved the idea of having it from Merrick's POV and that Nicky is happy living his best life with Joe.
