OP there's another prompt out there where Nicky was taken as a slave and castrated and forced into "service". Would you be interested/okay if I kind of smashed these two prompts together?

I always see everyone arguing over whether Joe or Nicky comes from the past abusive relationship. But we can have both!

Modern AU. Joe and Nicky meet in a group therapy/support group for survivors of domestic abuse. Joe’s former partner was never interested in what Joe wanted, and Joe found himself never speaking or doing anything before his partner suggested it. Now his friends have pulled him out of that situation and he’s ready to EXPRESS himself (and yes that means long waxes of poetry and everything in between).

Nicky, on the other hand, his former partner was more aggressive, so Nicky is quieter. He’s good at making himself seem small and invisible, and he’s only really in the group bc his friend Booker forced him after Nicky’s ex put him in the hospital. After all, why talk about feelings when you can repress them? (There’s the Catholic right there).

So they see each other around the group, but never really talk. Then, when Joe’s finishing himself ready to get back into the dating scene, his friend Nile has a great set-up. A meet-cute of sorts occurs, and they decide what the hell, let’s give it a go.

Cue the cute dates and talks, the angsty misunderstandings where Nicky takes Joe’s expression wrong and Joe takes Nicky’s quiet wrong, the rest of the guard being like “are you fucking serious” and the inevitable beautiful, communicative and safe romance that blossoms between them.

+1 for panic attacks and comfort
+2 for angst and a happy ending
