Modern day Nicky was in a serious relationship with Joe for a couple of years before the guy abruptly and brutally broke his heart and ran away. It was hard to find some semblance of normalcy after that, but Nicky mostly did... right up until he died and came back to life as the newest immortal.

Turns out, their relationship was supposed to be a casual holiday hookup while Joe was on a break from the team, but he ended up desperately in love and also absolutely broken when he had to end it to keep his secret.

They're both fragile and prickly and hurt, but slowly, with time and missteps, they fall in love again.
