Our Joe manages to get killed at the same time and in the same fashion as a Joe in an alternate universe. Unfortunately, fate/the-powers-that-be/what-have-you get confused and mix the Joes up when they come back to life.

AU Joe is only too happy for the switch because his Nicky has been dead (you know, the final one) for years. He doesn't care about our Joe and tries to fool everyone for as long as he can. But Nicky & the guard figure out the switch and AU Joe isn't willing go back to his universe. Even if this Nicky is mad at him he's still alive.

Obviously our Joe doesn't much like where he ended up either.

+++The universes are different in other ways too which is completely up to the writer

Back when it was just the four of them (Andy, Quynh, Nicky, and Joe), they were all in a poly relationship. After Quynh was taken, Andy pulled away from the others and broke off the relationship, but Nicky and Joe stayed together even without her. By the time Booker, and eventually Nile, joined the group, each of them just assumed that Nicky and Joe were a couple and Andy was their friend- they never realized that she was also their ex.

Post-movie, Quynh is back. She and Booker rejoin the rest of the team (I don't care how much detail you go into about this, you can handwave or skip it or write a whole epic sequel script, whatever you want), and eventually they all get back together, including Nile and Booker.

++If she shocks Booker/Nile by just assuming that Andy, Joe, and Nicky were all dating each other the whole time she was gone

Pretend the crusades eventually ended peacefully or make this completely au with some other conflict ending in a negotiated peace. Part of the peace negotiations include participation of select members of each side engaging in a mate hunt thus causing multiple joinings of both sides of the conflict and ensuring that a repeat of the conflict won’t be happening any time soon.

The selected participants are composed of hunters and prey. If a prey is successfully caught by a hunter, the hunter gets to keep them as a mate.

Joe is one of the selected hunters of his side, Nicky is one of the selected prey.

Commence the hunt!

Shit, can you tell me more about this story/legend?

Were they a nun and a wife of a merchant? A defending woman? How would they have met? Would they have less hangups toward a romantic relationship? How has it evolved over time? Would a modern Joe look like - would she veil? Would they still fight the same way?

Also because Arabic names are gendered in some ways OP suggests Yusra as a comperable name that could likely be transliterated to Jo/Yo.

Modern day Nicky was in a serious relationship with Joe for a couple of years before the guy abruptly and brutally broke his heart and ran away. It was hard to find some semblance of normalcy after that, but Nicky mostly did... right up until he died and came back to life as the newest immortal.

Turns out, their relationship was supposed to be a casual holiday hookup while Joe was on a break from the team, but he ended up desperately in love and also absolutely broken when he had to end it to keep his secret.

They're both fragile and prickly and hurt, but slowly, with time and missteps, they fall in love again.

Nicky is a tattoo artist who owns his own shop. His team is untouchable -- Andy's line work is fucking stunning, even if she is Very Particular about what clients she accepts, and Booker may be the most sullen motherfucker on the planet, but his surrealist style brings in new customers every week. And Nicky? Nicky is known for floral, of all things. Work is steady, and they have a rotation of regulars who bring them enough business to stay afloat.

The shop next door has been empty for at least a year, when suddenly there's activity! A curly haired florist with soulful, dark eyes moves in, and he's determined to make friends. (As are the two women who work with him.) Nicky is shy, accustomed to his routine, but he finds himself drawn in by the florist's sweet grin and even sweeter words.

Joe and Nicky were both in their 30s when they met/died and from societies where sex with people of the same gender was, though not usually life goals, a reasonably acceptable pastime (Joe maybe slightly more than Nicky but there’s plenty of evidence people were engaging in non-heterosexual sex in medieval Europe without significant censure). So it’s easy to imagine that they might have started having sex fairly casually. But marriage/long-term sexual relationships might be in a different mental bucket for both of them.

So imagine they’ve both fully bought into the idea of destiny having brought them together, being immortal brothers-in-arms, meant to wander the world together, etc. But the fact that they occasionally sleep together? That’s not part of their relationship, that’s just a low-risk, low-effort way to get their rocks off. The fact that they’ll sometimes spend three days in bed together when they have the opportunity is neither here nor there. It’s recreation, not romance.

And then...tell us what happens when one or both of them realises that it’s not just convenience, or because immortality has cut them off from normal relationship arcs as expected in their societies. Their relationship, including their sexual relationship, is what they both want, and would choose over anything and anyone else. They’ve invented gay marriage BY ACCIDENT.

Not keen on jealousy or internalized homophobia as major plot points - just their journey to intentionally having a kind of relationship they didn’t initially realise could exist.

Joe is tired of dating, he signs up for one those modern arranged marriage services that do all the work for you, sign the paperwork, your spouse will be there within a week. However, to his utter shock, The Algorithm sets him up with a Catholic Italian male? ?? ???????? ? The website refuses to change it or give him a refund, The Algorithm is never wrong, they have to at least try for [period of time] before they’ll take Nicolò back.

Nicolò understands Joe’s disappointment but promises to be so good for him as long as they live together, and be the best spouse ever and do all the cooking and cleaning so Joe can concentrate on his Art 🖼 He’ll just sit here in a corner. Don’t mind him.

Copley gives them a mission where the company they need to infiltrate is experimenting with teleportation. Joe gets caught in the machine, but when he comes back, it's as two Joes.

One Joe is the 'good' Joe, happy to be around people and wanting nothing more than to write sonnets about Nicky's eyes.

The other Joe is the 'evil' Joe, who is all about killing the people who annoy him, and wants to pin Nicky down and fuck him until he submits and agrees that he belongs to Joe.
