Merrick is not the youngest CEO in Pharma, he's in thhe slave trading business. And he's known for his extraordinary goods. So, when he learns about The Old Guard team and that they are immortal, he's more than delighted. He wants them and he wants to sell them because he knows he can make a shitload of money out of them. Slaves who never grow old, who never die no matter what you do to them and who heal in an instant so you can torture them over and over and over again... oh yes, he definitely wants them.
To get them, Merrick kidnapps Copley's wife and forces him to help him capture the team. Reluctantly Copley obeys. He lures the team into the kill-room to be sure they are the right ones, he goes with Keane to the church and captures Joe, Nicky and Booker (yes, he's not a traitor in this one) and when Andy and Nile return to Paris the three men are gone and by the time Andy and Nile arrive at Copley's house, the three are already sold and on their way to their new owners.
So, now Andy and Nile have to convince Copley to help them, have to rescue his wife, kill Merrick and then go after the guys who have their friends and free them!
