According to Copley's research, Nicky and Joe were in the Pacific theatre during WW2. It is well documented that there was a LOT of a gay sex happening around that time (particularly between Australians and Americans). I'd love a fic where Nicky and Joe have furtive, sweaty, frantic sex in the jungle, surrounded in the dark by the moans of the other GIs inspired by their actions.
